nate kellison a * next to the title of a song indicates
that this was it's first live performance. This was our first performance as NBC. We were there to help benefit and promote the opening of the new Alcazar Performing Arts Center in Plattsmouth. This performance was part of a conference to sample some of the new performances and talent that would be coming through Plattsmouth to perform at the new Performing Arts Theatre. This turned out to be a much more important show than we were expecting. After our performance, we were asked to be one of the main groups promoted and sponsored by the Alcazer Performing Arts Theatre. After the performance, we were invited back to do another promotional performance in September. On top of that, we were also invited back to do a full-length show (our OWN concert) sometime in October! YAY! This is HUGE for us! We will pass on more details of this upcoming concert as they are made available to us. As of now, it is still in the beginning stages. Being that we were performing in front of a small group tonight, we sang off-mic. We were also minus Drew Hoffman (due to vacation). All in all, this was a good first performance, which gained us some exposure and many more things to come in the future. Setlist * NBC Intro (Nate on lead) -- October 7, 2002: Lincoln, Nebraska (Kimball Recital Hall) Tonight's performance was a big one as far as our exposure was concerned. We were asked my Dr. Ecklund, a vocal music professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to help promote the Mens Choral Festival by performing as a part of the show. Basically, we were there to open the show for the UNL Mens Varsity Chorus. We were very excited about this performance, being that we were to draw a large crowd without having to make much effort in promoting the event. There were two Nebraska high school choirs, then us, and then the UNL Mens Varsity Chorus. This was our first official performance as NBC, being that all 6 members were present. We were given the opportunity to perform in a large auditorium with a large audience (probably around 400-500 people). It turned out to be an important experience for us, in order to get us ready for our big shows coming up in November. Setlist: Good Ol' Acapella -- Saturday, October 26, 2002: Plattsmouth, NE (Plattsmouth Lions Club Annual Dinner) For this performance, NBC was asked to perform about 10 minutes of music. The Lions Club only wanted a short amount of time for entertainment. But, were happy to get any amount of performance time. This served as an introduction of NBC to Plattsmouth, being that the group would be performing a two-night concert series the next weekend in Plattsmouth. Setlist: -- Friday, November 8, 2002: Plattsmouth, NE (Alcazar Theatre) This was NBCs first full-length concert. It also marked the first ever concert performance in the newly restored Alcazar Theatre in conjunction with the Plattsmouth Center for the Performing Arts. We were asked by Mark and Teresa Ferrill to put on a show for the town of Plattsmouth and surrounding areas. The concert was slated for 17 songs divided between 2 sets, along with a 2 song encore performance. The show went great! We were a little tentative during our first set, being that WE were the reason that people were there that night. It was OUR concert, which made us a little nervous. We came out and opened the second set with a little acapella gangsta rap with our rendition of Regulators. This got us and the audience a lot more energized. The rest of the show was a breeze. The encore turned out great. It started with Adam telling his story about being discovered by Lou Perlman, and hitting puberty at the age of 4 ½. The crowd loved this, and then Adam went on to sing The Lion Sleeps Tonight completely in falsetto. We finished the show with the National Anthem. Overall, this was a great performance for us. We received a lot of good feedback, and it really made a difference for our performance the next night. Setlist: 1st Set 2nd Set Encore -- Saturday, November 9, 2002: Plattsmouth, NE (Alcazar Theatre) This was our second full concert in two days at the Alcazar Theatre in Plattsmouth, NE. We had a good first night, but a GREAT second night. We had a lot bigger audience the second night. We noticed quite a few people there for the second night that were also there during the first night, which is obviously a good sign. Oh, one side note, Luke lost his voice overnight. Yeah, NO JOKE! So, during the day, Luke and Drew decided to changed voice parts for this show. Luke switched to Vocal Percussion, and Drew learned 10 songs in one afternoon while driving from Lincoln to Plattsmouth. Props to Drew for his quick learning, he saved the show! Nate and Justin also took over a few of Lukes lead songs, and Zakk switched around on a few songs to make this whole thing work. Adam just sang bass, because we cant. We ended up selling about 42 CDs during the weekend, and we had a lot of good feedback. This turned out to be a great weekend. We were tentatively booked by a gentleman in the performing arts circuit to do a concert next summer in front of a crowd of between 800 and 1000 people. That should be fun! Setlist: 1st Set 2nd Set Encore -- Thursday, November 14, 2002, Lincoln, NE (Villager Motor, Woodmen Accident & Life) This performance was for employees and former employees with Woodmen Accident & Life insurance in Lincoln, NE. We were asked to sing about 5 or 6 songs as part of their entertainment for the evening. Heres the setlist: Setlist: -- Friday, November 22, 2002: Lincoln, NE (Haymarket Theatre) This concert was supposed to be a benefit for the Haymarket Theatre. We had a pretty good turnout, given the fact that we were only given one week to promote the show. All of the proceeds for this concert went to benefit the theatre, so it was a good cause. We appeared on KRNU that morning with Rick Alloways acapella radio show, so that helped promote things. We were finally able to do an entire show with everybody feeling healthy, unlike the previous Plattsmouth concerts. Setlist: 1st Set 2nd Set Encore -- Saturday, November 23, 2002: Kearney, NE (Nebraska State Lions Club Convention) This turned out to be a very important show for us. Apparently, we were one of two groups performing that night, but the other group cancelled, so we got the entire time slot (and the entire entertainment fund). We ended up doing 12 songs, all of which we felt were appropriate for this audience. They were a very fun audience to perform for. We really hope to be asked back by the Lions Club, as we have many ties with the different Lions Club Chapters throughout Nebraska. We sold quite a few CDs that night, and had a lot of fun with the crowd. We thank the Nebraska Lions Club for their patronage and support! Heres the setlist from that show: Setlist: NBC Intro -- Saturday, November 30, 2002: Plattsmouth, NE (Town Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony) This performance gave us an opportunity to get another performance in, and also forced us to learn a few Christmas songs in a very short amount of time. We did not take our sound equipment with us, so we sang everything off-mic. Setlist: * What Child is This? (Justin on lead) -- Friday, December 6, 2002: Lincoln, NE (7th Street Loft) This was our second big concert in Lincoln in two weeks. We were really excited for this performance, and we put a lot of effort into the preparation for this one. We extended our show and ended up singing about 22 songs by adding in a few Christmas tunes. We figured that this would be our last performance for a month or two, so that we could have time to work on new material and develop some new ideas into realities. We had a good turnout, sold some CDs, and had a blast while performing! This was a FUN show! Setlist: 1st Set 2nd Set Encore -- Monday, January 27, 2003: Lincoln, NE (Haymarket Theatre) This performance marked the first performance for No Better Cause (NBC) in the year of 2003. Yes, NBC has decided to take the name of "No Better Cause", so as not to get sued by the TV network. No Better Cause is now the official name of the group. The event for the night was a fundraiser for the Lincoln Southeast High School choral music department, namely, Court Choir. The event was held to help raise money for the Court Choir students to be able to take a trip to Boston to perform later in the year. NBC was asked to perform at this event because we were all part of this choir and were all involved with the choral music department while attending LSE. There were many great performances throughout the evening.
No Better Cause opened the show by singing six songs. After following
some wonderful acts, NBC returned to the stage to perform two more songs
before Court Choir closed out the evening. We had a wonderful time seeing
the students and our former director, Joey Hartman. Opening Set Pre-Court Choir Set -- Friday, January 31, 2003: Plattsmouth, NE (Plattsmouth Community Playhouse) Tonight marked the return to Plattsmouth for No Better
Cause. Plattsmouth is home to the first ever full-length concert brought
to you by No Better Cause. We definitely looked forward to this weekend.
The staff at the Playhouse made this a memorable performance by painting an entire backdrop and stage for No Better Cause. We really appreciated this. It looked great! Setlist: 1st Set 2nd Set Encore -- Saturday, February 1, 2003: Plattsmouth, NE (Plattsmouth Community Playhouse) Tonight was the second night of our two concert series in Plattsmouth. There was a decent size crowd, but it was a great crowd to perform to. Everyone seemed to be into it and very lively. A lot of people showed up from Conestoga High School, a place where NBC performed the previous day. People also made the trip from Lincoln, Nebraska City, and even Auburn! We had a great time performing tonight, and we felt like it was one of our better shows. On a side note, which I forgot to mention in yesterdays diary entry...Scott Hoelscher, the manager of No Better Cause, was lucky enough to have his car towed on Friday while being in Plattsmouth. We'd really like to thank the Cass County Sheriffs department for giving us the run-around yesterday, you were a big help in making our visit so pleasant. In case you can't tell, that was a sacarstic statement. Everyone else in the Plattsmouth Community was awesome to us. But, Cass County Sheriff, you put a damper on things. Thanks. Sorry about that, I had to get that out. If you ever go to Plattsmouth, DO NOT park on the street in residential zones, or your car will be towed. Setlist: 1st Set 2nd Set Encore

2nd Set Encore Setlist Setlist 1st Show Fly Like An Eagle 2nd Show Tonight, No Better Cause performed a short program for the Lincoln Kiwanis Club. We're starting to make good friends with the Kiwanis Club. They have already booked us for a show next August for their state convention, so that's pretty cool...There were about 50 or 60 people there tonight. Here's what we sang: Star-Spangled Banner -- Sunday, September 28, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (Southwood Lutheran Church) This morning, No Better Cause was asked to sing three songs at each of the three services at Southwood Lutheran Church. The people in attendance turned out to be an outstanding audience. In fact, we sold a record amount of CD's at the church. We were very well received, and we will definitely go back to Southwood Lutheran. We met a lot of cool people, and we had a blast! Here's what we sang (three times): Light The Fire -- Sunday, September 28, 2003 (Lincoln, NE -- Masonic Temple) Tonight, No Better Cause performed for the second time in the same day, this time at the Masonic Temple, for their second and final meeting of the year. Most of these people had never heard of us or seen us perform. So, we were glad to see some new faces. Here's the setlist: Star-Spangled Banner -- Tuesday, October 7, 2003 -- Columbus, NE (Columbus Middle School) This morning, No Better Cause made it's debut in the city of Columbus, Nebraska, while performing at Columbus Middle School in front of a packed audience. Today marked the official release date for the second No Better Cause album release entitled "You Asked For It". The new album would go on sale later at an evening concert. Here's the setlist: 1st Show Fly Like An Eagle 2nd Show Fly Like An Eagle -- Tuesday, October 7, 2003 -- Columbus, NE (Immanuel Lutheran Family Center) Tonight was the official release for No Better Cause's brand new album, "You Asked For It". We were very excited for this show, and had looked forward to it for a long time. The audience tonight was better than outstanding! We actually had 13 and 14 year old girls yelling our names during the show. There were even a few ambitious young ladies who came onto the stage during "Lion Sleeps Tonight" to dance and sing with the boys. It was quite amuzing. We sold A LOT of merchandise, including CD's, our brand new T-Shirts, and our brand new posters. It was a very exciting evening! We signed a lot of autographs, including STOMACH autographs...(don't ask)...All in all, today was a great day. Tonight's performance was the third concert of the day for No Better Cause. We will look forward to heading back to Columbus sometime next summer. Here's the setlist: 1st Set Fly Like An Eagle 2nd Set She Took Me Away Encore Lion Sleeps Tonight -- Friday, October 10, 2003 -- Lincoln,
NE (Cornhusker Hotel, Pfizer 25 Year Club Tonight, No Better Cause performed for a crowd of about 150 people to celebrate the employees of Pfizer who had been there for 25 years or more. This was a very lively and exciting crowd. We were without Zack Bjornsen for this performance. So, we ended pulling out a few "No Better Cause golden oldies" to complete our set, mainly because these particular songs work well with five people. This was also the first time the new album (You Asked For It) was on sale in Lincoln, our hometown. Here's the setlist: Lion Sleeps Tonight (Zakk on lead, with
Pfizer 25 year inductees) -- Saturday, October 11, 2003 -- Omaha, NE (ALS Fundraiser Walk) Today was supposed to be a performance to help raise money for ALS research as a walk. Unfortunately, the rain was coming down pretty good, and no many people walked. But, we still did our performance with a decent audience on hand. This performance was without Zack. Here's what we sang: Setlist Fly Like An Eagle -- Wednesday, October 15, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (University of Nebraska, Union Plaza) Today marked the first performance on the
campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for No Better Cause. The
show was set up outside by the Set 1 Fly Like An Eagle Set 2 Only You -- Saturday, October 18, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Homecoming Royalty Brunch) This morning, No Better Cause was asked to sing a few songs to welcome the Homecoming royalty of UNL for 2003, and also to welcome back a few alumni members. It was a pretty solid performance, all things considered (Zakk was sick, we were completely off-mic, and it was 9:00am on a Saturday). We were very well received, and it turned out to be a good use of our time. Here's what we did: Stand By Me -- Sunday, October 19, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (St. Andrew's Lutheran Church) This morning, No Better Cause sang 4 songs at two different services at St.Andrew's Lutheran Church. The audience was good, and we sold quite a few CD's. And, we ate lots of free doughnuts. Here's what we sang, twice: Light The Fire -- Monday, October 27, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (Beacon Hills, Lincoln Community Blood Bank 35th anniversary party) Tonight, No Better Cause came back to perform after a week long break. This was a good thing for us. We were ready to get back out and do some singing. The audience at tonight's shindig took a little while to warm-up. But of course, after we were done singing "My Girl" that ate us up for the rest of the night. Here's our setlist: Fly Like An Eagle -- Wednesday, October 29, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (Southwood Lutheran Church) Tonight, No Better Cause performed at Southwood Lutheran Church to help raise money for a missions trip to Hondurous which a few Southwood members will be taking part in. The audience for this show was great, lots of CD's were purchased, and we had a great time! Here's the setlist: Fly Like An Eagle -- Sunday, November 2, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (Eastridge Presbyterian Church) This morning, No Better Cause sang a few songs at two different church services at Eastridge Presbyterian. Thanks to Nancy Schoen for asking us to come in. The service was a little more conservative than we were expecting, but they liked our stuff. We sold a few CD's, and nearly killed ourselves afterwards at the Valentino's buffet...sooooo much pizza...Here's what we sang (twice): Light The Fire -- Tuesday, November 11, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (The Loft at the Mill), appearing with The BathTub Dogs Tonight was a historical night for the city of Lincoln, as they were introduced to TWO a cappella groups. No Better Cause and the BathTub Dogs put on a concert together, for the first time ever! The show was outstanding! The BathTub Dogs came out and performed for about 45 minutes, and they did a great job! Following that, No Better Cause closed the show and brought the house down. This was an outstanding audience! We ended up selling out the theatre, and there were actually people that had to stand because there were absolutely no seats available. This is a good problem to have (sorry to those of you who had to stand.) Anyway, after seeing the success of tonight's show, it looks like No Better Cause and the BathTub Dogs will be doing more shows together next spring, and in the future. What a great night! And, thank you all who were able to make it! For those of you who didn't make it, you messed an outstanding show! Here's our setlist: Fly Like An Eagle Encore Lion Sleeps Tonight -- Saturday, November 22, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (Misty's Restuarant -- Hydronic Energy Inc. Holiday Party) Tonight, No Better Cause did it's performance for Hydronic Energy's holiday party (a company based in Des Moines, Iowa). The show went pretty well. We did about 9 songs, and then were asked to sing about 5 more following a prime rib dinner and a few drinks. It was a fun night. Even though the audience was small, they were fun and enthusiastic...Here's the setlist: Pre-Dinner Set Fly Like An Eagle Post-Dinner Set Only You -- Monday, December 1, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (The Landing) Tonight, No Better Cause performed it's first show of the year which featured holiday music. A few new songs were thrown in, and things went smoothly. We had two performances tonight. The first of which, was at The Landing. Here's the setlist for that show: Change In My Life -- Monday, December 1, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (BryanLGH Hospital East) This was the second performance of the evening for No Better Cause. We were asked to do about 30 minutes worth of material for the BryanLGH Foundation during their holiday party. Again, this was another opportunity for us to sing some Christmas music and some new stuff. Here's what we sang: Change In My Life -- Friday, December 5, 2003 -- Omaha, NE (McCormick's -- E&A Consulting Group holiday party) Tonight, No Better Cause faced one of it's biggest challenges to date. Unfortunately, Adam was unable to make it to the performance. Being that he is the group's bassman, he is a very important member of the group. We've had members gone before, but this was the first time that we've ever had to do a show without Adam. So, Zakk, the baritone, played hero on Friday and learned the bass parts for a few songs. Justin dropped his vocal percussion and took over a few leads. Nate even sang bass on one song, and he's a high tenor! We knew that this show was going to be a little different. But, things seemed to work out well. The boys were well received, and it turned out to be a good thing. We pulled out a couple of songs that we haven't done in awhile, which happened to fit well with tonight's lineup. Here's what we did: NBC Intro -- Saturday, December 6, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (JMarie's Bridal Shop, employee holiday party) Tonight was an enjoyable evening. No Better Cause performed for the employees of JMarie's Bridal shop in Lincoln. This performance might've been in the most intimate space that we've ever performed in. The room was small and about 50 people were packed in to it. But, it was enjoyable. It was also nice to have the whole band back for this one. Here's the setlist: Fly Like An Eagle Encore Lion Sleeps Tonight -- Sunday, December 14, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (Capital City Christian Church) This morning, No Better Cause performed during all three Sunday morning services at Capital City Christian Church. This was the first time that No Better Cause has visited CCCC, even though it's the home church of Nate and Luke. The people in attendance were very receptive and loved what we had to offer. We'll probably be back there in February at some point. Here's what we sang (3 times): The First Noel -- Friday, December 19, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (St. Paul's Underground, St. Paul's United Methodist Church) Tonight, No Better Cause performed it's final public show of the year by being the year end finale group at St. Paul's Underground at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. This was the longest performance in which No Better Cause has ever performed. We were slated to do 2 and a half hours worth of music, which is more than we've ever done. So, we had to pull out a few NBC golden oldies, and added two more songs to the set which haven't been performed yet. Overall, it was a good night. The people who run The Underground said that this was the biggest audience that they've ever had for any of their concerts, which is a huge compliment to us and our fans. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it out that night. Here's our giant setlist: Set 1 Fly Like An Eagle Set 2 Carol Of The Bells Set 3 Only You -- Sunday, December 21, 2003 -- Lincoln, NE (Office & Interior Designs Holiday Party, Wilderness Ridge Golf Club) Tonight, No Better Cause (minus Zack) performed for the Office & Interior Designs holiday party. The show was very intimate. There were only about 20 people there, and the room was tiny. But, we set up a couple of speakers (no monitors) and ran with it. We did about 12 songs, and things went well. This was our last performance of 2003. Here's the setlist: Fly Like An Eagle -- Thursday, January, 15, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Sheridan Elementary School) Today was a very exciting day for No Better Cause. We spent the day at Sheridan Elementary School to teach the little kids about the kind of world which we mingle in. After spending seven class periods (one for each grade), we performed a concert for the kids and their teachers. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Thursday, January 15, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Sheridan Elementary School) Tonight, No Better Cause performed for a packed house at Sheridan Elementary. We could not believe the turnout from the students and their parents. The show went great, and we reached a personal record by the amount of CD's we sold at any one performance. We spent the entire day at the school with the kids, and they came back for the show in the evening. We had a blast the entire day, and would love to do this again. Special thanks goes to Patty Niemann for bringing us to Sheridan. Here's what we sang for the evening show: Set 1 Fly Like An Eagle Set 2 She Took Me Away -- Saturday, January 17, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (UNL Student Union, Univeristy of Nebraska Women's Soccer Booster Dinner) Tonight, we performed for a few minutes during the UNL Women's Soccer Booster Dinner. The show was fine, but not long enough. I've gotta say...Girls that play soccer are hot. Ask Zack (extraordinary soccer player) about his opinion of female soccer players: Fly Like An Eagle -- Friday, February 6, 2004 -- Des Moines, IA (Hoyt Sherman Center, with Straight No Chaser and 515) Tonight, No Better Cause owned the stage (sarcasm) while performing with Des Moines 5-man group, 515, and the famous University of Indiana's own Straight No Chaser. SNC was the headliner, but I think we stole the show (kidding fellas, everyone wants to feel that way after performing with another group. I think I accidentally insulted someone, but it was not meant as a knock. My apologies. The sarcasm in my post wasn't made very clear.). Obviously, our style is different from theirs. We were only allowed to do five songs. But, we made our mark and showed Des Moines what a cappella is all about. We had a good time hanging out with SNC afterwards and nearly dying on the interstate while driving back to Lincoln due to black ice. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Sunday, February 15, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (St. Paul United Methodist Church) This morning, No Better Cause performed a few songs at two of the services for St. Paul United Methodist Church. This was the place where we did "The Underground" show. Good bunch of people, and we were well received. Sold a few CD's as well. Here's what we sang (twice): Light The Fire -- Saturday, February 21, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Eastridge Presbyterian Church, Caleb Eddy's 80th Birthday Party) Tonight, No Better Cause performed a 30 minute set for Caleb Eddy's 80th Birthday party. Caleb is Nate & Luke's grandpa. So, this was a fun gig. A decent audience was on hand, and we they seemed to enjoy what we brought to the show. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Sunday, February 22, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (St. Mark's United Methodist Church) WOW! What a wonderful morning! This morning, No Better Cause was honored to sing at all four services at St. Mark's! The people there were great! Special thanks goes to Anita Elliot for booking us, and to Doug McCallum (The Waffleman) for recommending us to Anita to book us. We sang 3 songs at the first service, and four songs at the next three services, including a new one. And, we broke our record for most CD's sold at one venue! Woo hoo! We officially ran out of "First Time Around", and we're down to one box of "You Asked For It". Time to order some new ones! Anyway...With talks of No Better Cause releasing a gospel/contemporary Christian album this summer, we should be returning to St. Mark's in August for the official release of that CD. Here's what we sang: 1st Service Light The Fire 2nd, 3rd, and 4th services Light The Fire -- Sunday, February 29, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Capitol City Christian Church) This morning, No Better Cause sang 2 songs at all three services and Nate and Luke's home church, Capitol City Christian Church. This was an enjoyable morning. We get a pretty good response every time we sing there, and we enjoy doing it. We sold a few CD's, and might've wrapped up another opportunity to do our gospel show when that album comes up. CCCC may host us for our entire show, which would be a release show for the new gospel album. Yee haw! Here's what we sang three times: Criminal On The Cross -- Saturday, March 6, 2004 -- Denver, CO (Newman Gates Concert Hall, 2004 Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes) Tonight, No Better Cause participated in it's second Harmony Sweepstakes. Last year, we placed third and took home the award for "Best Original Song". This year, we made a huge improvement in personnel and the sound and show was completely different (and better) than what we did last year. We were lucky enough to take home second place this year. The only group to beat us was an outstanding group of gentlemen by the name of Inpulse, from Minneapolis. According to a few judges, and others associated with the Harmony Sweepstakes, they said that this was the most competitive and "loaded" sweeps show they've ever seen. They also said that deciding between us and Inpulse was very difficult, which means a lot to us. Anyway, we hung out quite a bit with Inpulse after the show and became pretty good friends with them. In fact, I think we're going to see the Denver Nuggets play tonight, and then we're doing a show together in Boulder on Monday. Look for Inpulse to appear soon in Lincoln. We'll be sure to bring them in sometime in the near future. They a great bunch of fellas, and very talented too! Check out more stuff from Inpulse at www.inpmusic.com ...I think you'll like what you hear. Back to us...We had a bit of an adventure trying to get to Denver. We left Lincoln on Thursday, figuring to get into Denver fairly early, so that we could spend the next day and a half relaxing and enjoying our time away from home. Well, and 3/4 of the way there, we had one of our tires blow out. And, we put our spare on, but discovered that it was flat as well. So, we called AAA, and they came out to put air in our spare. But, for some reason, they weren't allowed to bring us a new tire, even if we paid for it. So, we get back on the road, hoping to get to the next town on our spare so that we can buy a new tire. On our way there, the Colorado Sheriff's office pulls us over. He had heard that we had some trouble, but wasn't able to reach us in time. So, he pulls us over and radios ahead for someon to meet us in the next town with a new tire, and the guy was supposed to be there within an hour. THREE HOURS LATER, our tire arrives and we're able to get back on the road towards Denver, only to find that a thick fog had settled in. Yee haw. So, we drove through the fog, which eventually lifted. And, once we got into Denver, we were met with a pretty decent snowfall. Luckily, we made it to our hotel with no casualties, and we settled in for a weekend with the hardest beds ever. I'll have more to write tonight and tomorrow after our next two shows. But, here's what we sang for the sweeps, with CHOREOGRAPHY! Haha, go figure... Africa -- Sunday, March 7, 2004 -- Denver, CO (Chopper's, Vocal Jam) This afternoon, No Better Cause participated in a Vocal Jam associated with the Harmony Sweepstakes. It was us and Face sharing the stage. Each group did short sets. It was a nice and relaxed afternoon. Here's what we sang: Star-Spangled Banner -- Monday, March 8, 2004 -- Boulder, CO (Redfish Brewery) Tonight, No Better Cause performed in the semi-famous Redfish Brewery, a place who regularly hosts a cappella groups, both from the Boulder group and groups who happen to be passing through town. After placing second at the Harmony Sweepstakes, we were asked to stay in town for one more night to do another show. This show was a lot of fun. The only thing that wasn't fun was the fact that we had to get into the car and drive home after we were done. So, we arrived home at about 5:00 a.m. the next morning. This show was also Zakk Wooten's last with the group. Here's our setlist: Fly Like An Eagle -- Tuesday, March 16, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Belmont Elementary School) Today, No Better Cause conducted a day-long workshop at Belmont Elementary School. And, after working with the kids all day, we had our concert that evening, which was a blast. The turnout was pretty good, and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. We had a good day, and we thank Belmont students and staff for all of their help and hard work. Here's what we sang in the evening show: Fly Like An Eagle -- Saturday, March 27, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Union Auditorium) with M-PACT Tonight, No Better Cause was truly lucky to be able to host and share the stage with, in my humble opinion, the best vocal group in the world! That's no stretch, folks. I've been listening to m-pact for a number of years. And, I truly believe that there is none better. We got to play host to them for the weekend by setting up their hotel arrangements, picking up their van, writing their check, etc...It was truly an honor. These guys are the most down to earth people that you'll ever meet. And, their sound is unlike anything I've ever heard. Their live show was AMAZING!!! I was floored, to say the least. I hope and pray that we get the opportunity to sing with these guys once again. They were a joy to work with. Oh, anyway, here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Friday, April 30, 2004 -- Murdock, NE (Elmwood-Murdock Middle/High School) This afternoon, No Better Cause put on a concert at Elmwood-Murdock Middle/High School for a few hundred students. This was the band's first show in a month, so it felt good to get back out on the stage again. The sound and energy was really good. This show was the first of two shows for the boys on that day. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Friday, April 30, 2004 -- Omaha, NE (Omaha Civic Auditorium Music Hall) Tonight, No Better Cause performed it's second show of the day putting doing a concert at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. A fairly good sized crowd turned out, and we had a lot of fun on stage. The acoustics in this place were great! Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Sunday, May 2, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Nebraska Wesleyan University) Tonight, No Better Cause put on a short concert for a student bar-b-q type of thingy in the courtyard between a couple of dorms. It was a pretty laid back show, and kind of a different atmosphere than we're used to, but it wasn't to bad. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Friday, May 14, 2004 -- Omaha, NE (Central Park Academy Elementary School) This morning, No Better Cause made the trip to Omaha to conduct a workshop for the choirs of Central Park Academy Elementary School of Omaha, and Riverside Elementary School of Iowa. And, following the workshop, the band performed a one hour concert for the entire student body of Central Park Academy. This was a very enjoyable morning, and we had a blast performing for the students. A big thanks goes out to Margaret Hein for booking us and working so well with us. Here's what we sang at the concert: Fly Like An Eagle -- Friday, May 14, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Lakeview Elementary School) Tonight, No Better Cause performed it's second concert of the day by performing an evening concert at Lakeview Elementary School. We had visited Lakeview the day before to conduct a couple of workshops. The concert was pretty laid back, but we had a blast. A special thanks goes to Cindy Potthof, former elementary music teacher of Nate and Luke, who booked us to do the show there. We also brought a new song to the set this evening by performing Justin's arrangement of Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistable". Here's the setlist: Fly Like An Eagle -- Thursday, May 20, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Zeman Elementary School) Tonight, No Better Cause performed a concert for the staff, students, and parents of Zeman Elementary School. And, earlier in the day, we were at the school conducting student workshops, and we did a short concert as well. We had a great time at this show, and especially enjoyed the ice cream sundaes afterwards. Yum! Special thanks goes to Nancy Bargen (Zeman music teacher) for all of her help, as well as Erin Andersen (PTO President) for making all of this possible...We also added a funky new song to the set, Kansas' "Dust In The Wind", but funkier. Here ya go: Fly Like An Eagle -- Tuesday, May 25, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Norwood Park Elementary School) Tonight, No Better Cause performed a concert at Norwood Park Elementary School in Lincoln after spending the afternoon with the students. This was a lot of fun. The staff at Norwood Park was great and very hospitable. A special thanks goes to Principal, Bill Thurmond, Music Teacher Matt Hull, and the Norwood Park Parent/Teacher Organization. Thank you, everyone! We'd love to come back sometime. Here's what we sang in the evening: Fly Like An Eagle -- Saturday, May 29, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Private Party) Tonight, No Better Cause was supposed to perform an outdoor concert during a private party. But, due to some nasty storms, the performance had to be moved inside. Being that this was at someone's house, we ended up having to move things to the basement. And, after seeing the basement, we realized that there was no way that we were going to be able to set up our sound system in there, or even a fraction of it. So, we ended up doing the entire show completely off-mic. Yep, no speakers, no monitors, no effects, just us and the audience. This made for a very interesting performance, something we hadn't done since our very first performance as a group (the first performance listed in this diary). There were a few songs thrown in by request. Here's what we sang: Dust In The Wind -- Monday, May 31, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Veterans Memorial Garden, Antelope Park) Tonight, No Better Cause performed at Veterans Memorial Garden for a Memorial Day Celebration to remember those we've lost while serving our country. This was the second year that we were asked to sing. The turnout was great, and the evening was special. Here's what we sang: Star-Spangled Banner -- Thursday, June 3, 2004 -- Omaha, NE (Qwest Center, NAIFA Convention) This morning (8 a.m.), No Better Cause performed a 30 minute set to kick off the annual NAIFA Convention (I can't remember what it stands for, but it has something to do with insurance companies in Nebraska). We were very well received, and had a great time performing. The audience was very supportive of our endeavors, and we appreciate that a lot. A special thanks goes out to Ruth for her wonderful hospitality. Thank you! Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Thursday, June 24, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (The Grand Room) Tonight, Justin Runge performed his last show as a member of No Better Cause. And, No Better Cause also released a new CD tonight, RElease. The show itself was a little "rusty". The five of us hadn't performed together for three weeks, and we've been rehearsing with Michael for the past month. Nate and Zack both forgot a lyric or two during a one of their leads. So, yeah, there were a few rough spots here and there. But, not a bad show. The turnout could've been a little better. Apparently, Thursday nights when school is not in session is a bad time to have a concert. Oh well. Thanks to those who DID show up. You were a good audience. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Saturday, July 24, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Trevor Kern Foundation concert) Tonight, Michael Evans made his debut appearance as a member of No Better Cause. His first show with No Better Cause was a success as the group's sound has risen to a new level. Michael's beatbox sound mixed with the vocals of the rest of the guys went over extremely well as a large crowd turned out for the first annual Trevor Kern Foundation concert. This was a great day for No Better Cause, and the guys are excited to perform more and more with the new sound. A big thank you goes out to Bob, Linda, and Jacy Kern, as well as Steve Pile who's country/blues/folk style entertained the audience after No Better Cause left the stage. Thanks to everyone who was involved with this great event! Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Wednesday, July 28, 2004 -- Pawnee City, NE (Pawnee County Fair) Tonight, No Better Cause performed at the Pawnee County Fair in southeastern Nebraska. It was a dreary day. We arrived about 3 hours before showtime in order to set up our sound system. Unfortunately, it was raining hard. So, they ended up moving us to another place which wasn't on the fairgrounds. We ended up performing in a much smaller space. The acoustics weren't too great in this hall, and we had some trouble hearing our stuff. But the audience seemed to enjoy it, and we were happy to be there. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Thursday, August 5, 2004 -- Columbus, NE (Frankfort Square Park) Today, No Better Cause loaded up the trailer and began it's journey towards Columbus, Nebraska. Before pulling out of the driveway of No Better Cause headquarters, we discovered that we had a light problem with our trailer. None of our brake lights or turn signals would work on our trailer or van. After panicking for a few minutes trying to figure out what to do, Michael decided to investigate. Michael, our in-house electronic genius, with the help of Zack, discovered that we had blown a fuse in our van causing certain brake lights and turn signals to stop working. So, we drove 5 blocks to an auto parts store and bought some fuses. After plugging two into the fusebox, they both blew immediately. This was not good... So, Michael decided to twist two wires together which were connected from the van to the trailer. (It's hard to explain.) Woo hoo! It worked! So, we were on our way...
We arrived in Columbus not too far behind schedule (we had to stop at the Seward Wal-Mart to pick up a CD/tape adapter for the van, since our van only has a tape player and no CD player). AGAIN, we were on our way...We arrived in Columbus at Frankfort Square Park and began to set up our sound equipment and run our soundcheck...Lovely! We finally got to use our sub-woofers (we didn't use the sub-woofers in the last two shows due to poor weather, but it was beautiful tonight).
Finally, showtime...We had a really good show, despite the fact that Nate was struggling to hit his high notes due to him recovering from a mid-summer's cold (yes, Nate has a cold in the middle of the summer). So, he struggled to hit a lot of the high notes tonight, but the overall sound of the group was solid. We got to sing a few new songs from the gospel album (which we did make available tonight, even though the official release of the album isn't until next week). Overall, we had a blast. A huge thanks goes out to Karen Campbell and the Columbus Arts Council Staff. They did a heck of a job, and we appreciate everything. The turnout for this event in the park was great, probably 400-500 people. And, we were told that people were already requesting for the Arts Council to have us back next summer. Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Saturday, August 7, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis Club Convention) Tonight, No Better Cause performed during the Kiwanis Club convention at the Cornhusker Hotel. Things went awesome tonight! The sound was great, and we felt like we were right on tonight. The audience was fantastic as well. We had a blast, and we hope to be asked back again. A special thanks goes to Sue and Tracy for getting things together. Thank you! Here's what we sang: Fly Like An Eagle -- Sunday, August 15, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (St. Mark's United Methodist Church) Tonight, No Better Cause performed it's first ever gospel- emphasized concert. The guys also made tonight their official release show of new album, Immeasurable. Things went great! We debuted a few new songs and sold a few CD's. And this morning, Zack and Nate got to meet the greatest coach in the history of college football, Coach/Dr./Congressman Tom Osborne. Congressman Osborne definitely lived up to his reputation. He is truly a kind and genuine human being. We were both starstruck as he shook our hands. It was a real treat to meet him...Anyway, back to the music...A special thanks goes out to Anita Elliot and Doug McCallum for their help in making this show possible. Here's what we sang: * Rock My Soul (Nate on lead) -- Friday, August 20, 2004 -- Lincoln, NE (SouthPointe Pavilions) Tonight, No Better Cause performed at the SouthPointe Pavilions summer concert series for the second straight year, and we were very well received. We saw a lot of familiar faces there, which is a good sign. And, it was also great to see so many new faces. A special thanks goes out to Julie Lattimer for having us back at SouthPointe once again this year. Here's what we sang: 1st Set -- | ||
